Hanfu photos without a photographer: DIY phone tips for Datang Everbright City

Friend to friend: you don't need a photographer to come home with lovely hanfu photos. Datang Everbright City is a Tang-themed street that glows after dark, and a modern phone with night mode, a steady hand and a few easy poses goes a long way. At Yunjin Chang'an, ¥199 = one hanfu outfit + makeup & hair with no photographer — so here's how to shoot it yourself, and when a separate photo package might still be worth asking about.

Before you leave the studio

01

Charge and clean

Bring a charged phone and a power bank — night shooting drains the battery. Wipe the lens with a soft cloth; a smudged lens makes lights look hazy.

02

Take your first shots indoors

Your makeup and hair are freshest right after styling, so take a few close-ups and half-length photos before you head out.

03

Make a mini shot list

Full-length, half-length, a close-up of your hair and makeup, details like sleeves and embroidered shoes, and one from behind to show the hairstyle.

04

Know your time

Makeup and hair take about 1–2 hours, and the return time is agreed when you book — plan your photo walk around it. Free touch-ups at the studio, as arranged on the day.

Phone settings that help at night

Night mode on, flash off

Flash flattens the warm street lights and your makeup. Let night mode do the work and hold still until it finishes.

Keep it steady

Brace your elbows, lean on a railing, or use the self-timer. A small phone tripod or selfie stick helps solo travellers — keep it compact and out of the way in crowds.

Tap the face, then dim a little

Tap to focus on the face, then slide the exposure down slightly so bright lights don't wash out.

Use 2x or portrait mode for people

A slight zoom flatters faces and blurs the lights behind into soft dots. Save the ultra-wide lens for the whole street, not close-ups.

Burst, Live Photos or a short video

For movement — a swirling skirt or a floating shawl — shoot a burst or a few seconds of video and pick the frame you like later.

Easy poses that work in hanfu

01

The slow walk

Walk slowly towards the camera, lightly lifting the front of your skirt. Your friend shoots a burst.

02

Look back over your shoulder

Turn away from the camera and glance back — this shows off the hairstyle and the line of the outfit.

03

Hands and sleeves

Fold your hands in front at waist height, or hold the edge of a sleeve or shawl. Relaxed hands look more natural than stiff ones.

04

Couples and friends

Walk side by side, face each other, or stand back to back. Matching colours make group photos look put together.

Light, crowds and manners

Golden and blue hour

Around sunset, when the lights come on and the sky still has some colour, photos look soft and bright. That's why we suggest coming to the studio in the afternoon.

Face the light

After dark, turn so the street lights fall on your face rather than sitting directly behind you; otherwise your face goes dark.

Crowds

Weekends and Chinese holidays are busy. Try a lower angle shooting slightly upwards to keep heads out of the frame, or wait a moment for a gap. Keep your phone and bag close.

Be considerate

Don't block walkways or performances, and ask before photographing other people up close.

Weather

In the rain, a clear umbrella looks good in photos. On cold evenings, wear a thin thermal layer under your hanfu and ask us on the day what outer layers are available.

Editing and when to add a photo package

Light edits

A little warmth and contrast brings out the lights. Go easy on smoothing filters so your makeup still looks like you. Keep the originals.

Want someone else to shoot?

¥199 does not include a photographer. If you'd like a planned shoot, ask about a separate photo package — price, shoot length, number of photos, retouching and any tickets are confirmed when you book.
