Trying on hanfu (traditional Chinese clothing) is a favorite thing to do in Xi'an, the old Tang capital Chang'an. Here is the friendly, no-nonsense version of what we tell our own friends: how it works, how long it takes, and what to check before you pay. We are Yunjin Chang'an, a hanfu and makeup studio on Cuihua Road near Datang Everbright City: our ¥199 package = hanfu + makeup & hairstyling, and it does not include a photographer.

How a hanfu experience works
Send the date, arrival time and number of people (adults / children) by phone, WhatsApp or WeChat: +86 180-9207-8118. Evenings, weekends and Chinese public holidays fill up first.
Tang-style robes with high waistlines and flowing sleeves, plus other hanfu styles. The studio has 700+ outfits including sizes for men, women and children (as of May 2026).
Done one-on-one to suit your face, the look you like and the outfit style. Disposable makeup tools are used, and outfits are washed and sanitized for each guest.
Head to the Big Wild Goose Pagoda squares and Datang Everbright City in your look. If your makeup needs a fix while you are out, you can come back for a touch-up as arranged by the studio.
A photographer is a separate photo package, not part of ¥199. With the City Wall photo package, the studio pays the City Wall tickets for the photographer and assistant; you buy your own ticket.
The return time is agreed when you book. The studio is open daily 10:00–21:00.
Rental, full styling or a photoshoot: pick what you need
- Hanfu + makeup & hair (our ¥199 package): you get dressed and styled, then explore on your own and take photos with your phone or your travel buddy.
- Add a photographer: choose a photo package if you want posing help and a set of photos. Photo packages are priced separately; ask what is included when you book.
- Couples, friends and families: book everyone together and mention the number of children and their rough ages and sizes so outfits can be prepared.
Before you book any hanfu studio: a quick checklist
- What exactly is in the price — outfit, makeup, hairstyling, hair accessories?
- Is a photographer included, or is it a separate photo package?
- If you book photos: how many edited photos and original files, and when are they delivered?
- What time do you need to return the outfit?
- Are there sizes that fit you (men's, children's, taller or larger sizes)?

Where to wear it: photo spots nearby
Open squares around the pagoda with soft afternoon light — an easy first stop in your new look.
The pedestrian boulevard south of the pagoda is liveliest after sunset, with Tang-themed lights and street performances. Walking it is free. Blue hour, right after sunset, balances sky and lights; weekends and holidays are very crowded.
A ticketed Tang-style garden next door, good if you have extra time.
A dramatic backdrop; available as a photo package (the studio covers the photographer's and assistant's wall tickets).
About 1 km from the studio. Museums and temples are for visiting, so keep your voice down and do not block the galleries for photos.
Tips for international travelers
- Language: the studio uses AI translation apps, and simple English is possible at the front desk. WhatsApp +86 180-9207-8118 works for booking.
- Getting there: show the Chinese address above to your taxi or DiDi driver. The studio is on Cuihua Road, not inside Datang Everbright City and not inside the museum. The studio is near Datang Everbright City — ask us how to get there.
- Timing: for night photos, arrive in the afternoon so makeup and hair (1–2 hours) are done before sunset.
- What to bring: your phone and a power bank; a small bag keeps your hands free for sleeves and props. Disposable makeup items are provided.
- Payments: Alipay and WeChat Pay are used almost everywhere in China and can link many foreign cards — set them up before your trip.

Many visitors dress up near the Big Wild Goose Pagoda and Datang Everbright City. No. The ¥199 package is hanfu + makeup & hairstyling. If you want a photographer, add a separate photo package when you book.
How long does a hanfu experience take?
Makeup and hairstyling take about 1–2 hours, depending on your features, the look you want and the outfit. A photo package adds about 40 minutes to 1 hour. Plan half a day if you also want to walk around in your outfit.
Can foreigners wear hanfu in Xi'an?
Yes. Visitors from all over the world wear hanfu around Datang Everbright City and the Big Wild Goose Pagoda. Wear it with respect, ask about the style you are wearing, and follow normal visitor manners in temples and museums.

When is a good time for hanfu photos at Datang Everbright City?
Late afternoon to blue hour. Start makeup in the afternoon, catch soft light at the pagoda squares, then the boulevard lights after sunset. Weekends and holidays are crowded, so allow extra time.
Is the studio inside Datang Everbright City or Shaanxi History Museum?
No. It is an independent studio on Cuihua Road, next to Crystal Orange Hotel, about 1 km from Shaanxi History Museum. You get dressed there and then head to the pagoda and the boulevard.
